Delta Airlines announces the adoption of an RFID tag-based baggage tracking system later this year. The technology is mature and the objective is twofold: reducing costs and reducing passenger stress | |
![]() | For years, airlines and airport managers have been studying systems that can guarantee baggage left at the check-in desk reaches the same destination as their legitimate owners. The solution , at least in theory, has existed for some time and is based on the association of an RFID tag to each suitcase which allows its journey to be traced via radio frequency readers positioned along the routes that transport the luggage to and from the hold of the plane. Delta, the first airline to move from theory to practice, announced in recent days that it has started a program to replace the current barcode tag system hanging on each suitcase with the more modern and functional RFID-based tracking system. |
The new tracking method , which effectively allows baggage to communicate its position in real time and in totally automatic mode at the check-points along the moving walkway and storage areas, will affect Delta flights in 344 airports by August and will bring the reliability of baggage transport from the current 95% to a level close to perfect, with a success rate that Delta claims will reach 99.9 percent |
